Welcome to my personal profile!
My name is Ricky, I have spent the majority of my life within southern Ontario learning about subjects that some may find boring, but it is now my turn to teach and hopefully change the views of future and current generations into actively learning about these areas of interests!
I recently graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with a degree in Financial Mathematics where I studied theoretical and practical applications to finance, statistics and mathematics. Currently, I am back at Wilfrid Laurier University in the Facility of Education studying to receive an Education degree (BEd) in Junior/Intermediate with a teachable in Mathematics.
Who am I as an educator
My hopes are to change the way that we all think about Mathematics and STEM. Often, I hear;
“I’m not good at math … I don’t like math … I’m not smart”
from students, other teachers, and even myself. In my experience, these phrases are usually blurted out from anxiety or stress about the subject. As educators, we need to turn away from these stress-inducing activities like tests and quizzes and move into projects where children and students have the hands-on experience to explore and question their findings. Creating this environment will convince students that math is not about finding the answer to a problem but instead, finding the solution to a problem.
My Prize Possession
In many of my lessons you will see an image or icon of a motorcycle, this is because in my free time, I love to work on and ride my Honda Rebel CMX300. I continue to advocate for students to embrace their interests and to use them as a subject for whatever we learn about (art projects, math problems etc.) and you will likely see me use this as an example for students to talk about or share their own interests with.
Alternative Educational Pathways
I currently work for a project called Digital Main Street (DMS) funded by the Government of Ontario, Ontario Business Improvement Area Association (OBIAA) and Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas to provide free digital coaching and support for small businesses located within Ontario. This includes helping businesses with their adoption of technology and the application of certain DMS grants. In this position, I become an educator for adults and teach them business and marketing techniques that they can use for their business. This position has provided me with opportunities to engage in different teaching techniques that may be beneficial when working with a different age group.
